Microphone privacy guide

Is my phone listening to me?

Short answer: your phone is not secretly transcribing your conversations to sell you shoes — but a surprising number of apps do hold standing microphone access, and that access is real, revocable, and worth auditing.

How microphone access actually works

On both iOS and Android, an app can only reach the microphone after you grant the permission once. After that, the grant persists until you revoke it. Modern phones show a small indicator dot when the mic is live, and the operating system logs recent access in privacy settings. Continuous background recording is loud, battery-hungry, and easy for researchers to spot — which is why repeated studies have failed to find it happening at scale.

Why the ads feel like they heard you

The uncanny ad is usually built from data you gave away without speaking: location history, contact graphs, browsing and search signals, purchase records, and shared identifiers across ad networks. If you stood in a store, messaged a friend nearby, or searched something adjacent, the targeting model does not need audio to make a good guess.

Real warning signs to look for

  • The mic indicator turns on while no app should be recording.
  • A utility, wallpaper, or flashlight-style app requests microphone access at all.
  • Battery drain and heat with no foreground activity.
  • Background data usage far larger than the app's function needs.
  • Clipboard-read or location prompts appearing when the app is idle.

How to shut it down

  1. Open your privacy dashboard: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone on iOS, or Settings → Privacy → Permission manager on Android.
  2. Revoke the microphone for every app that does not need voice to work.
  3. Repeat for camera, location, contacts, and clipboard-adjacent permissions.
  4. Turn off personalised ads and reset your advertising identifier.
  5. Delete apps you no longer open — a removed app cannot ask again.
  6. Re-audit monthly; updates can re-prompt for access you already refused.
